Artist House welcomes creators from diverse backgrounds and experience levels. Our comprehensive support system ensures every resident has the resources, guidance, and community connections needed to make their residency transformative. From pre-arrival planning to post-residency alumni networks, we're committed to supporting your artistic journey every step of the way.
We accommodate 6-7 artists during each residency period. This group size creates a vibrant creative community while ensuring everyone has sufficient space and resources to develop their practice. The intimate cohort allows for meaningful artistic dialogue and collaborative opportunities while maintaining the peaceful, focused atmosphere our historic farm setting provides.
Every accepted artist receives personalised mentorship from our experienced program coordinator. Before arrival, we'll schedule a comprehensive consultation to understand your artistic goals, technical requirements, and personal needs. Our on-site team provides ongoing support including studio assistance, local connections, feedback sessions, and help navigating the regional creative community. We also organise group critiques, workshops, and cultural excursions tailored to each cohort's interests.
We provide a shared farm vehicle for group activities and essential trips to nearby towns including Hamilton (25 minutes), Dunkeld (20 minutes), and Cavendish (5 minutes). For greater independence exploring the Grampians National Park, Henty wineries, or coastal areas like Port Fairy and Warrnambool, we highly recommend hiring a car and can assist with rental arrangements. We also maintain bicycles perfect for exploring our 4-kilometer laneway with stunning mountain views and the surrounding countryside.
Our historic farm is beautifully positioned just 3.5 hours drive from Melbourne and 5.5 hours from Adelaide, making it easily accessible from major airports. We recommend flying into Melbourne or Adelaide, then hiring a car for a scenic drive through New South Wales' stunning countryside. The journey offers glimpses of the landscapes that will inspire your residency. We provide detailed driving directions and can arrange airport pickup services for an additional fee if preferred.
Our shared farm vehicle is available for group excursions and essential trips to Hamilton, Dunkeld, and Cavendish. However, having your own rental car provides the freedom to fully explore this incredible region - from the Grampians National Park (20 minutes away) to coastal towns like Port Fairy and Warrnambool (50 minutes), plus the renowned Coonawarra and Great Western wine regions. We provide bicycles for farm exploration and can assist with all car rental arrangements to make your artistic journey as enriching as possible.
You're ideally positioned on the edge of the Grampians National Park (just 5 minutes drive) with Halls Gap 55 minutes away, offering world-class bushwalking, rock climbing, waterfalls, and wildlife viewing. On the farm, explore our 4-kilometer laneway with breathtaking mountain views, perfect for walking or cycling among 600+ year old red gums. The historic 1864 woolshed provides fascinating glimpses into Australian farming heritage. Nearby, enjoy excellent dining at the award-winning Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld (20 minutes) or the Bunyip Hotel in Cavendish (5 minutes) featuring award-winning Chef James Campbell.
Our Australian countryside location experiences four distinct seasons. Summer (Dec-Feb) can be quite warm with temperatures reaching 35°C, perfect for early morning and evening studio work. Autumn (Mar-May) and Spring (Sep-Nov) offer ideal conditions with mild temperatures 15-25°C and stunning natural colours. Winter (Jun-Aug) is cooler at 5-18°C but rarely freezing, with occasional rainfall creating a cosy studio atmosphere. We recommend checking current weather patterns as conditions can vary yearly.
While English is the primary language, we welcome international artists with varying proficiency levels. Our staff speaks several languages and we've successfully hosted artists from non-English speaking backgrounds. The local community is welcoming and patient with language barriers. We find that art transcends language, and many meaningful connections form regardless of verbal communication skills.
Absolutely! We regularly receive art supplies and personal items for incoming residents. Contact us at least two weeks before your arrival for shipping instructions and our receiving address. We'll ensure your materials are safely stored and waiting in your studio space when you arrive.
We're happy to source materials locally for an additional service fee. This is particularly useful for heavy, fragile, or specialized items that are difficult to transport. Send us your requirements list at least three weeks before arrival, and we'll provide quotes and availability. This service has proven invaluable for sculptors, printmakers, and installation artists.
Our studios are equipped with basic tools, easels, and furniture. We maintain a shared equipment library including power tools, printing facilities, projection equipment, and various specialized instruments. Each year we expand our offerings based on resident feedback and emerging artistic practices. Priority goes to equipment that serves multiple disciplines and future cohorts.
Currently, we don't provide direct financial support, but we can supply official invitation letters and detailed program documentation to support your grant applications to arts councils, cultural institutions, and other funding bodies. We've successfully assisted many artists in securing external funding and are happy to provide references and program validation for scholarship applications.
All our programming is entirely optional - you're here to create your best work in whatever way suits you. However, we strongly encourage participation in group activities as they provide valuable networking opportunities, cultural immersion, and often spark unexpected creative collaborations. Many artists find these shared experiences become highlights of their residency.
Our open studio weekends are relaxed, celebratory occasions where you can share your work-in-progress with the local community, fellow artists, and visiting arts professionals. There's no pressure to have 'finished' pieces - people are genuinely interested in seeing your creative process and learning about your practice. These events often lead to future opportunities, sales, and lasting friendships with locals who become ongoing supporters of your work.
Hamilton (25 minutes drive) offers comprehensive shopping including Aldi, Woolworths, Coles, and various specialty stores for art supplies and daily needs. For immediate essentials, Cavendish (5 minutes away) has The Bridge Cafe which stocks basics, newspapers, and fresh bread. Dunkeld (20 minutes) features the Old Bakery and other local shops. Our shared farm vehicle can be arranged for shopping trips, or we can assist with car rental for greater shopping flexibility.
Upon acceptance, a non-refundable deposit of $400 AUD secures your place and must be paid within 14 days. The remaining balance is due 10 weeks before your residency begins. We accept bank transfers and major credit cards. Cancellations more than 6 weeks in advance receive a full refund minus the deposit. Cancellations 6-2 weeks prior receive 50% refund. Later cancellations forfeit all fees. Rescheduling within the same calendar year incurs a $100 administrative fee with 6 weeks notice, subject to availability.
Our main studio building includes ground-floor workshops fully accessible for wheelchair users and people with mobility challenges. Accommodation varies by property - please contact us to discuss specific accessibility needs so we can match you with suitable housing. We're committed to ensuring all artists can participate fully in our program.
Our residency focuses on artistic development and cultural exchange rather than prescribed outcomes. We ask only that you engage authentically with the experience and consider sharing something with our community - perhaps a skill-sharing workshop, a cooking demonstration of your cultural cuisine, or simply participating in community events. These informal contributions help build lasting connections between artists and locals.
Your fee covers furnished accommodation with utilities, 24/7 studio access, basic equipment usage, curatorial support, organized group activities and excursions, bicycle access, high-speed internet, welcome orientation, and inclusion in our alumni network. We also provide bedding, towels, and basic kitchen supplies.
Plan for travel expenses, comprehensive travel insurance, meals and groceries, art materials and production costs, personal items, optional car hire, and any additional services. We recommend budgeting $50-80 AUD daily for comfortable living expenses, though costs can vary significantly based on your lifestyle and project requirements.
Visitors are welcome! Partners and friends can stay in your accommodation for $25 AUD per night (minimum 3 nights). Families with children require private accommodation arrangements which we can organize with advance notice. Visitors cannot access studio spaces for insurance reasons, but can participate in public events and community activities.
Our resident farm cats help with pest control and provide delightful companionship. The neighboring properties have various farm animals including horses and sheep. Wildlife is abundant - expect to see kangaroos, various bird species, and perhaps echidnas or wombats. All animals are accustomed to people but should be respected as wild creatures.
Absolutely! Pets are very welcome at our farm residency. We understand that creative companions often include four-legged family members. We have purpose-built dog kennels and a fully fenced dog yard for your convenience, though pets must remain outside the accommodation buildings. This setup allows your pet to enjoy the farm environment safely while you explore nearby areas like the Grampians National Park. With 600+ year old red gums and open farmland, it's a paradise for pets and their humans alike.
All accommodations feature fully equipped kitchens for independent cooking. Our local town has a weekly farmers market, fresh produce shops, bakeries, cafes, and two excellent restaurants featuring regional cuisine. We can arrange catered meals for special events or if you prefer not to cook. The regional city offers major supermarkets and diverse dining options for variety.
